After several more crashes, I think I've found the source of the
problem: the fan I tried to fix. Seems it had simply stopped
dead, and the machine subsequently overheats. So the machine is
currently running in case-open mode so I can prod the fan if it
sticks again. The machine has been up for an hour without
crashing, which is better than it was doing earlier.
